The Daily Beet: Tips, Advice and Stories

Holiday Travel – Plus a Holiday Giveaway!

Hot off the presses! “Forks Over Knives” : The Extended Interviews was JUST released! We will be giving away 2 copies today! And 2 next week (you’ll have to check back with us everyday to find out when!) All you have to do is leave a comment and tell us why you’d really like to get “The Extended Interviews”! We’ll pick 2 winners at random!

Traveling for the holidays? Before you get on the road, make sure you plan how you will keep it plant-strong!

1. Pack food! We can not stress how important it is to have great food options packed and ready to go for your travels. One of our favorite things that we own is a 3 tier tiffin. These are stainless steel carry containers that are fantastic for holding every thing from a healthy salad to oatmeal or beans and rice. We use our tiffin for every car trip over 3 hours, so that we don’t have to rely on eating out somewhere or gas station food. Some great things to put in your tiffin:

Fat Free hummus

Rice and Beans

Granola

Salsa

Cold macaroni salad

While you are picking up a tiffin, you might want to pick up a set of bamboo utensils.

2. Plan out your trip to include plant-strong  friendly restaurants. Often, we will plan out our route according to Happy Cow. We will check out our route on google maps, and change it around so that our trips become vegan food tours. We have found great places in big and small cities alike. You can even call ahead and ask if you can get a meal with out oil in it!

3. Rent a vacation home instead of staying in a hotel. Check out VRBO , Air BNBand Homeaway for some great deals on vacation rentals. This way you get a house with a kitchen and can bring in your own food. Most of the time house rentals are far cheaper than hotel room rates. Another tip on vacation rentals, if you can visit somewhere off season you will save A LOT. If you are willing to be on the beach in the winter you will be paying very little for a great place.

*If you do stay in a hotel, be sure to look for one with a mini kitchen or at the very least a mini fridge.

4. Plan out quick and easy meals from the grocery store.

You can get a bunch of stuff for some good meals:

Here are some basic ingredient ideas:

Bagged dark greens
Chopped veggies
vegetables:  cucumbers, tomato’s, zucchini, mushrooms, carrots, celery
Chopped up fruits (or if you can bring a knife, you can cut up fruits/veggies on your own)
*also most stores sell cheap cutting knives.

banana’s, oranges (things you don’t even have to worry about washing)
raisins
canned (low sodium) beans (if you can bring a can opener, or buy one there for really cheap at the grocery store)
whole grain bread
balsamic vinegar
fat-free or oil free hummus
A healthy cereal – no sugar added shredded wheat is great, ezekiel cereal, grape nuts, no sugar added corn flakes.
Non dairy unsweetened milk
oil free/low salt woven wheat crisps (the Whole Foods brand is Engine 2 approved)
salsa
unsalted  whole grain pretzels
extra firm tofu (not silken)
whole grain bread
whole grain wraps
oil free low salt corn crisps or rice cakes.

Sample meal plan of quick grocery store meals:

Breakfast:
Rip’s “Big bowl” is a great and easy meal! Or… cereal with all the fruit you like in it. (and non dairy milk)
or: slice of whole wheat bread with a little nut butter and fruit.

snacks:
chopped veggies with hummus, pretzels and raisins trail mix. hummus and pita bread

lunch/dinner:
Salad with lots of veggies and a can of beans and balsamic vinegar on top

Sandwich - lots of veggies on a sandwich with dark lettuce, and a slice of tofu (if you want) – you can put balsamic vinegar on it, mustard or a fat free vegan mayo.
*soak tofu in balsamic vinegar for tastier tofu.

You can also mash up some beans in a plastic sandwich bag and use it as a spread on a sandwich.

Hummus in a whole grain pita pocket filled with veggies

5. Become a menu expert.

Scan the menu and find the healthier options.
Don’t use the menu as an absolute – more like a guide. So if you see there is a baked potato in one dish you know they have baked potato’s and you can start mixing and matching stuff!

Italian places
: Whole wheat pasta with tomato sauce and veggies – great dish. Tell them to hold the cheese!

Mexican:
Beans, salsa, veggies, tortillas, rice! If they have brown rice – even better. Be sure to double check every thing, sometimes they will put lard in the beans!

Greek: Hummus, veggies, pita – sometimes they have some decent salads as well. (again be sure to skip the cheese)

Sushi
: Veggie sushi rolls, again if they have brown rice – even better.

American: Check the menu, look for things like whole wheat pasta, brown rice, steamed veggies (ask them to hold any butter) salads with tons of veggies and a non dairy dressing.

Pizza! Just get it with out cheese but TONS of veggies – get every veggie you can fit on it. Many places have whole grain pizza crust now.

Hotel breakfast bar: Fruit and oatmeal (cooked in water).

“Faster Food”

Baked potato (plain) and side salad – some fast food places.

Pei Wei: There are many animal free dishes at Pei Wei, you can ask for a dish with “tofu and vegetables” instead of the meat option. Best of all? At Pei Wei you can ask that the dish is not cooked in oil, but cooked in vegetable broth – they call it “stock velvet”. This cuts the fat content by about 35%! Also, skip the sauce or put it on the side.

Gas stations:
Most have fruit now!

6. Stay hydrated!
Often when people travel they do not drink enough water. Fill your water bottles and be sure to drink water throughout your trip.

7. Airline travel:
Aside from liquids  (more than a 1/2 cup) you can bring any food on a plane. Cereal in little bags, wraps, salads, sandwiches – anything you like. If you are traveling with the family, be sure there are plenty of healthy snacks to bring along as well.

8. Staying with family:
Hopefully your family is thrilled about your plant-strong lifestyle! If you won’t have a car, ask someone ahead of time if they can take you to the grocery store to stock up on some plant-strong food.

If your family is not thrilled with your plant-strong life – simply tell them that you have some really crazy food restrictions right now, and you don’t want to complicate their wonderful preparations, so you just need to pick up a few things at the grocery store. For more tips on how to handle family, check out part 1 of surviving the holidays.

9. Smartphone apps: There are a few smart phone apps to make your travel easier:
Veggie Passport
Vegan Recipe Finder
Vegan Steven
VeganXpress
VegOut
Yelp
Trip Advisor
Whole Foods
AirBNB
HomeAway

10. MOVE! Get out of the car and walk/jump around a little bit. Go for a morning jog while you are visiting relatives. Don’t sit at the airport, walk around instead (you’ll be sitting on the plane!). Just be sure to move when you can!

11. Stay Connected!

As the holiday season approaches, we here at Engine 2 are here for you! Be sure to like us on facebook . If you are stuck or need to vent, or need some advice, get that smart phone out and write to us! We are also on twitter @engine2diet

We are also running a holiday special for our new support site, Engine 2 Extra which works nicely on smart phones as well as on your computer. We’ve got support, coaching, groups, tele classes (10 previous classes that you can access), live chats, a big holiday book with over 80 pages of tips, stories and lots of recipes and our holiday plant-strong cooking series continues next Tuesday with Cathy Fisher from Straight Up Food!

(this is what one of the pages looks like on a smart phone)

Safe travels!

I’ve been plant strong for quite a while but people are always asking me new kinds of questions about my dietary choices. You’d think there would be a limit to how much I could read about this way of eating but I’m pretty compulsive and I am always looking for new thoughts, ideas, and ways of encouraging people to shift the way they eat, even if they aren’t ready to go “whole bean”, so to speak. At my age (63) I have more and more friends who are experiencing food
related health issues. I have a “lending library” that gets a lot of use
as I talk to people about their dietary patterns. I’d love a copy of The Extended Interviews for my own use and to add to my lending library.

  2. Deb says:

I bought your book last month and have learned so much, I have already made a lot of changes to my lifestyle, but I am going 100% plant strong on New Years Day. I have seen the “Forks over Knives”, and I was very encouraged, shocked is more like it. I have tried every diet there is and I am someone who needs a swift kick, to get motivated. I only rented the DVD, so I would love to have the version with extended interviews to give me the extra motivation I know I am gonna need to stick with this. Your book and website are amazing, I have already tried a few of your recipes and I love that they are quick and easy, even my 10 year old has enjoyed them.
    Thank you

  3. Kyle Plattner says:

Those DVDs look so interesting and instructional.

  4. Kelly says:

The new video would be wonderful to have. My husband has high cholesterol, blood pressure and triglycerides. I find that every time he watches a different video his eating habits become a little better taking him one step closer to staying a vegan and getting healthy.

  5. It would help me SO MUCH with my motivation! after coming out running in March..i have hit a speed bump..and MUST get past this..the Book would solve my great need

  6. Dawnt says:

I love being plant strong.. traveling and eating out is the hardest, but I’ve learned that restaurants are usually willing to accommodate as much as they can. I did not know that about PeiWei and the veggie stock! I will remember that for sure!!!!!!!!

  7. Becky says:

I would LOVE to have the video! We have been plant strong for 3 months now and we are still learning. I love to be able to watch things for education, inspiration, and reinforcement. I would also love to be able to share it with family and friends so I’m hoping! Thanks for all you do!

  8. Angel Pendleton says:

This time of year it is hard to make a purchase for yourself, so I am hoping to win this! It will be great to go back to my doctor and tell him I have followed his instructions and for him to see the results as well as feel better about myself!

  9. holly says:

I’d love to get the new video so that I get a Christmas present this year. I have missed 6 weeks of work due to a recent head trauma, so Christmas is going to be crafty and sparse this year.

  10. Paul says:

I would love to get the DVD, I persuaded my Dad to go predominantly plant strong about 6 months ago and he has done great loosing lots of weight and reducing cholesterol. He is a retired butcher and I think the extended interviews will hopefully make him take the final step and become 100% plant strong. Thanks!

  11. Carrie Cleary says:

I have adopted this lifestyle for the past six months thanks to Forks Over Knives and The Engine 2. I truly feel that eating this way is the only way to live a long and healthy life. I have been sharing my experience with others and I would love to have the extended interviews to continue to learn and share this wealth of knowledge with others!!

  15. Monica W. says:

I would love to get the DVD to be able to learn more about being plant-strong. The more I learn the easier is to explain how awesome this lifestyle is to family and friends. The DVD would also be something I can go back to for support and inspiration when life tries to get me out of track!

  20. Steph says:

I would love to have a copy of the extended interviews! I have been fully plant-strong for just over a year (November 2011), but my family is not. If my parents could watch these interviews and see the science and data behind my choice, maybe they could get on board and experience the benefits that myself and so many others already have! Thanks!

  21. Sibyl says:

I have watched the original movie several times, and have both books, sure would like the extended interviews

  22. Stacy H. says:

Because after drinking WP Kool Aid for years I need all the help I can get

  24. Kamalei O says:

I found forks over knives to be very informative and motivating to eat healthier. I would like to share it with more of my family, especially those who think healthy = tasteless.

  25. Gina C. says:

I would really love to get the extended interviews. I am a 25 yr working as a full-time volunteer and recieve SNAP. I’m about 20 pounds over-weight. I constantly struggle with being able to eat quick fast prepared “diet” meals, and farm fresh food from the farmer’s market and my local vegetarian farmer’s market. I also had a brother, in his 40s, who had a heart attack not one month ago. My father had the same a blockage in the same section of his heart. I’m scared for my health, and FOK has made a large impact on my life. I read Engine 2 Diet, and I’m working very hard at transferring into a whole-food plant-based diet with the help of the Engine 2 Diet. If I was given a copy, I would share it with my family, and I believe it would make a big impact.

  26. Tiana Duart says:

Would love the extended edition as FOK is the reason I changed my eating habits. Any little think to help keep me on track helps.

  27. ellen says:

this documentary should be shown in every health class starting in elementary schools!!!! it started me on a wonderful journey that i am now sharing with my son!

  28. Rob says:

I would love to get the extended interviews DVDs. I try to catch all of the expert videos on youtube and like to be able to share whatever I can on plant based eating with my friends. My FOK video is off with someone else right now too.

  29. Terri says:

I’d be SUPER excited to get a copy of this. Just in the last few months stumbled upon the Engine 2 family and am slowly getting my husband to join in. Thanks for all y’all do!

  30. Susan H says:

The Extended Interviews would be great to keep me motivated to keep eating right. I’m sure they would help my husband to give up some things he’s having a hard time with. I would love for him to get the motivation he needs to get out of the morbidly obese category.

  31. Sara M says:

I would love to get the extended interviews! I read every blog post from E2 and HH and have seen FOK as well. I am always seeking out youtube videos from all the plant-strong superstars! I learn better from having someone explain information to me, which is why I love the videos!

  32. I’d love to have a copy so I can watch it with my friends and family. We are huge fans of Campbell, Esselstyn, and McDougall!

  33. Deidre says:

I was on chapter 2 of the China Study when I knew I was about to change my life forever. Forks Over Knives was next then I moved on to Engine 2 and The Starch Solution. I was inspired to read that all of the above agreed. Unlike every other nutritional book or movie on the shelf there was cold hard facts to back up their claims. I was relieved to learn that I didn’t have to die from the illnesses of my parents. Since April of this year, I have been Plant Strong. A few days ago I pulled up Forks Over Knives on Netflix and watched it again. The movie again inspired my on my journey to life long health. I would love to see “The Rest Of The Story” if you will. Thanks for Everything, DMc

  34. Brad says:

I want a copy to help get me going in the right direction.. to get me even more motivated.. I have seen Forks over Knives (3 times in the past month) and it’s very informative and eye opening.. I just haven’t changed my diet yet.. But I hope to do so soon…

  35. Blujay says:

I would love a copy of the Extended Interviews because I want to see/read everything I can get my hands on. It is not only hugely educational, but new material is also added motivation to keep me going. I have one habit in particular that I would like to kick to the curb: here I am learning to cook healthy foods, trying to change my taste buds to appreciate all the wonderful choices in fruits and veggies, whole grains and herbs and spices, and I’m bogging it all down with my addiction to CoffeeMate. It has to go. I have Rip’s Kitchen Rescue DVD and the original Forks Over Knives DVD – they are so compelling that I went cold turkey into the plant-strong way of life. Now I just need that extra nudge to dump the coffee and CoffeeMate problem. Thanks for everything!!!

  36. patty says:

I love the work you do! You are saving lives!!

  37. Sharon says:

The Extended Interviews would be great to add to my library. Looking for lots of resources to support family members who aren’t plant strong like us.

  38. Huge fan here of E2, the Drs McDougall,Campbell, Bernard,Esselstyn, and HH! I would love a copy to keep me motivated! I am diabetic and on my way to cure myself and get off meds but it is so hard. Since September I have lost 22 pounds following all these wonderful doctors and turning vegan.. Want to lose more. I watch the first video once a week. Would love new material to add to it. Also the more I watch the more I hope my husband, children, and extended family will follow. My husband who is a big meat eater proclaimed after watching Forks Over Knives the first time : “I guess I can do some more meatless days. Lets start that up.” Was music and a miracle to my ears. With more material who knows what will happen.

  39. Martha says:

I have been plant strong for one year, lost weight and numbers are finally great!. Every time I watch FOK video i get more out of it. the extended interviews would be best and i will have more information to tell my friends why they should consider a plant strong way of like also.

  42. LC says:

I’d love a copy because more information is always good!! Plus, it means I have more information to share with the people I really want to encourage to go whole-food-plant-based!!

  43. My husband and I have been eating low-fat vegan (also gluten free) for almost 30 years thanks to Dr. McDougall. It has saved us from a number of disabling illnesses. Even so, I’d love to receive the Extended Interviews because there is always something else I need to know to improve our odds of living long, healthy, happy, productive lives.

  49. Sadie says:

I would love to have this movie to share with my family, who always have so many questions about my diet. Thanks!

  50. Rebecca G says:

I would really like to get the Extended Interviews because my brother and I both changed our lifestyles after the watching the movie, and it has been a bonding experience for both of us. We do not live together, so we invite each other over for plant-strong meals and share plant-strong recipes. We both enjoyed the interviews that were already released immensely, and I believe our lifechange has brought us together, both as family and as best friends, even more. For him being my #1 supporter, if I win the Extended Interviews, it is going in his Christmas stocking.

  51. I would be the Happiest person if I won the DVD wanting it so bad but holding out buying for myself till after Christmas so Santa doesn’t run out of Funds for the Grandkids and the other people in my life… Fingers and toes crossed!!!

I would love to have it because I love to cook!

  54. Josefin B says:

I’ve only heard rumors (good ones!) about this movie over here in Europe but it’s a fortune to get hold on it. I’d love to have a copy to keep educating my peers about a plant based diet and a healthy lifestyle in general!

  55. JP says:

I’d like to win the drawing…. I have the ibook versions of FOK and the Engine 2 diet. And, having this third item would be a reward to myself for all of the healthier choices that I have made since becoming more plant strong!

I’d like to see the extended interviews as they will help keep me on track. I am constantly inspired by the people who are bringing this important message to the world.

I’m a librarian and I’m always interested in new book releases. I have the Engine 2 Diet on my Kindle and a print copy of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. I’d love to win a copy of The Extended Interviews.

  63. meredith says:

I’d love the DVD for my classroom. I teach high school ESL students. I’ve managed to teach them that exercise is really important. Some students are even going to the gym. Now it’s time to start talk about the food. Now it’s time to talk about the food they eat. They all see the food that I eat, but now it’s time to turn it into a unit…a long unit! The DVD would really help.

  64. Pam Honthumb says:

FOK got me started on being plan strong, Engine 2 has helped me with their Engine 2 diet, the more I read the more committed I am. I didn’t have any major health reasons only the desire to live a long life. I know so many others who could benefit and I’d like to share what I learn from the Extended interviews. There is alway more to learn.

I am approaching 1 year living plant-strong. I have lost 30 pounds and 75 points of total cholesterol as I approach 150 or below as my cholesterol goal. Thank you Drs. Esselstyn and Campbell. I wish there was a couples discount rate for the F2F events!

  66. Fran says:

I’d like ot get the extended reviews because I live in a country where Forks Over Knives is not yet available. Immersions don’t happen in Israel. Awareness is not known in Israel. I’m working very hard on being vegan in a family that doesn’t wan to hear about it.
