Maximizing Weight Loss: How To Fine Tune Calorie Density

This note is in response to questions I frequently get about weight loss.   The questions usually have to do with not losing weight at all, not losing enough weight or not losing weight fast enough.

Weighing yourself on a scale on a weekly basis is the best method to tell if you are in a negative calorie balance.  To do so, weigh yourself on the same scale, in the same place, at the same time, in the same clothes.  For the most accurate weight, weigh yourself without clothes on,  first thing in the morning after awakening and going to the bathroom.

On average, you should be able to safely and healthfully lose about 1(-2)% of your weight a week and maybe even more.   This amount is an average over time and some weeks you will lose more and some weeks will be less. Those who have the most weight to lose, will lose the most weight in the beginning.  While 1(-2)% may not seem like much, if you multiply the number out by 12 weeks, 24 weeks or even 52 weeks, this could easily equal 24, 48 or 100 lbs or more.

Now, if you are not losing weight, the first thing to do is to review the principles of calorie density and make sure you understand them and are applying them correctly.   You can find these principles outlined in the newsletter, “A Common Sense Approach To Sound Nutrition.”

If you are following the principles of calorie density and your excess weight is not coming off as quickly as you would like, then there are some adjustments you can make to what you are doing in regard to the “calories in” and the “calories out” end of the equation.

In regard to calories out, you have three areas you can make adjustments,  which are frequency, intensity and time (FIT). You can exercise on more days or more times in a day (Frequency), you can raise the intensity of your exercise (Intensity), and/or you can do it for a longer period of time (Time). For most people, 150 minutes of exercise per week, should be more than enough.

In regard to calories in, you can lower the calorie density of the diet, by shifting the composition of your meals to include more foods that are the lowest in calorie density (vegetables, salads, soups, etc).   Make sure 1/3 to 1/2 of the visual volume of all your meals are low calorie dense vegetables. The other 1/2- 2/3 should be unrefined, un-(or minimally)-processed complex carbohydrates (legumes, intact whole grains, starchy vegetables.

In addition, you can make the following modifications:

– Salt: For many people, salt seems to act as an appetite stimulant. So, the less you salt your food, the less people tend to eat.

– Variety: For many people, having a variety of foods available at each meal also seems to encourage over consumption. Therefore, the less variety at a meal, the less food consumed.

– Raw Foods: Foods you can eat raw tend to be lower in calorie density and may not digest as efficiently as cooking helps the digestion process.

– Sequencing: Eat the lowest calorie dense foods first. This fills you up so you eat less of the higher calorie dense foods.

– Avoid (or strictly limit):

– all higher fat, calorie dense plant foods, nuts, seeds, oils, avocados,

tofu, etc.

– all refined processed grains & starches that are higher in calorie density

(breads, bagels, crackers, cookies, dry cereal, tortilla’s etc & anything

made from ground up flour) even if they are whole grain.

-all concentrated sugars/sweeteners  (sugar, brown sugar, agave, honey,

molasses, date sugar, etc) even if they are natural and organic

– all dried fruits.

If you follow the principles of calorie density and make the necessary adjustments as needed, you will lose weight in a healthy way at a healthy rate.

    I have been plant strong 1 year as of April 1st. Getting a little complacent lately – not sure if that is the correct word to use – so it is time to kick it up a notch again.     Would so love the cookbook! Brand new plant based dieter, trying to learn new recipes to fix for my family! I’ve checked out the engine 2 cookbook at the library, saving up to buy it, but this cookbook would be a great start for me & my family. Trying to persuade my hubby that plant based is the way to go, but he’s reluctant due to thinking things won’t taste as good.     I am introducing several friends to a plant-based diet. Last evening we watched your McDougall ASW presentation (cooking demonstration). It was so practical and most needed (meal preparation, I think, is where most people fail with their diet). Thank you for your simple, easy meal ideas!     Thanks. Can you pls explain more about the comment on raw foods and digestion? Are you saying that is a problem for weight loss results? I eat a HUGE salad with raw salad veg every day, should I eat less of that and instead eat more cooked veg? confused now. Thanks!

    I’ve been eating a low fat, whole foods, vegan diet for eight months now and I already own a copy of Jeff’s “Burgers and Fries” DVD. I have type 1 diabetes and my goal is to do everything I can so that my child and her children eat in a way to increase their chances of avoiding this and other chronic diseases. One of the challenges I still have is dealing with my daughter’s paternal grandparents’ way of eating. I would love to give them a copy of Jeff’s DVD!

    After attending the Farms to Forks event in January my wife and I adopted your rules. We were both already following a Vegan lifestyle but at 6’1 and 214lbs I was overweight. We cut salt, all oils and limited nuts, seeds and dried fruit to condiments only. We also eliminated smoothies and instead we now chew all of our calories. I have dropped 25 lbs (189 this morning) since January.
    My wife who was already in great shape and an avid triathlete has dropped 10 lbs and weighs less than she did in high school.

    Great advice! I lost a ton of weight at first and am now losing about 1 pound a week. I’ve been pretty happy with the loss! Your DVDs would be perfect for my wife and I and our 1-year old. He can easily eat a veggie patty everyday at daycare for lunch and I would love to have some more recipes for those.

    Great info about weight loss–I’d always heard 1 to 2 pounds/week, which sounds dismally slow. Realizing it should be 1 to 2 Percent, not pounds, is something (about 68%of my current weight is overweight!) I am working toward more nutrient-dense eating, and would like to win “Burgers and Fries”, which is a great way to stuff more nutrition into a tasty, semi-portable food.

    It’s burger and fries season so I picked up a beautiful book on vegan burgers only to find they like to use oil in almost every burger! I’ve been plant-strong thanks to E-2 and the entire FOK crew for the last 2 years and it’s been the best thing I’ve ever done for my health. My friend and I now do cooking classes monthly in our little community and will be trying to channel Jeff N. as we demo your 5-ingredient super-meal at the local health fair in two weeks.     The reason why I would love to own a copy of the Burgers and Fries DVD is that I am a visual person and I need to see to be taught how to cook recipes – I need pictures or DVD know-hows.     I would LOVE a copy of Burgers and Fries! I have been making great strides in changing the way my family eats and even how we view food, BUT…I have a 14 yr old extremely picky eater (and hubby sometimes) and she doesn’t like to try most of the foods I prepare.     Thanks for your insightful tips! I live a completely plant-based, whole foods life. My omnivorous boyfriend has a significant amount of weight to lose. He is on board with plant-strong living when he eats home, which accounts for 60-75% of his food intake. Since he is being so supportive of my efforts, I strive to make vegan meals that he will not only tolerate, but will love. A copy of “Burgers & Fries” would be of great help! Thank you!

    I would like a copy of “Burgers and Fries” to show at the community center of the senior housing facility where I live. I see so many who should not be on scooters at their relatively young age. But, I have no credentials, other than successful reversal of several physical issues through plant based diet, and who can comprehend that who is stuck on the food plan that got them where they are today – shopping for scooter batteries?

    With 7 children it gets too expensive to buy veggie burgers not to mention that there aren’t many that are truly good for you.     I would love to win this!! Last year our son went into the Airforce, and all his hard work and dedication to his health and getting in shape really inspired us. So, we wanted to get in shape and healthier before we went to see him at his graduation of basic training. A friend of mine told me about the documentary, Forks Over Knives. We watched, and long story short, it was very eye opening and inspiring. Since then we have been going thru the process of adapting a plant strong lifestyle.     Practically everyone on my dad’s side of the family has type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high BP, sleep apnea, etcetera. Several have had bypass surgeries. I’m 33 and overweight and transitioning toward a plants-based diet. I’d rather be preventative than head into middle age on an unhealthy path. I don’t have the income to buy books right now and depend on the internet. A book would be great 🙂

    I need to try your recipes!! I have been following the Engine 2 Nutrition plan from the first book. For two months now I am loosing weight but not as much as I would like. I must be doing something wrong. I have Fibromyalgia and Osteo Arthritis in my back. I also have troubles with my disc’s coming out of place very easily. I try to exercise walking works best for me however, to often the pain is too much for me to exercise. I am hoping a plant strong diet will help me with some of this pain. Your books look great! I am going to have to try some of them.

    After my husband experienced heart issues and discovered a blockage in the “widow maker” artery, I set out on a journey to discover a compatible yet delicious new lifestyle. It turns out that all three of our sons (18, 22, & 25) have joined us in our quest to eat a healthier diet. We started our plant-based journey on February 20, 2013, and we are still going strong.

    I do notice when I salt things, that I tend to eat more, and there are just some foods that I plain don’t like without salt. I’ve been plant based for 2 years, but I still sprinkle a little salt on top of some foods.

    I started my plant based eating on January 7th. I have never felt better. My 13 yr old son has been doing it too. I feel you need to lead by example and your children will follow. I love the weight I have lost and also that I am never hungry.The best news is my blood pressure which was pre hypertention is now within the normal levels. We went to a friends for Easter and they had meat and all the stuff that is not good for you. My son had some and he told me he would of rather had one of the black bean burgers I make from the Engine 2 book!! I had some in my fridge at home. I am on a tight budget but my heath and the health of my son’s is well worth it. Any books would be a blessing to us. I rented your book from the library and copied a few of the recipes down but would love a new book to be able to keep!!

    I started my Plant-Based journey on March 4th. I suffer from a few auto-immune dieseses and obesity. I have seen great things in just a months time. My blood pressure is lower and I have started to lose weight without feeling deprived. I feel so good that I was able to eat Easter dinner with my family and not be tempted with the high calorie processed foods in front of me. I would love to read any book that I can to help me continue my journey.

    I am in school to become a Registered Dietitian. It’s so hard listening to information I just know is not true (such as we all must have milk for calcium and such). What a wonderful thing to see an RD using his credentials for good and going against the status quo. I hope to follow in those foot steps if I can just make it through this program.     I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and have been taking medication for the past 6 years…..I want to be healthy and strong in my later years…sooo I gave up dairy last year and that made a difference and then this year we have become 90% plant based and feel even better…..however I’m afraid to go backwards because I find myself cooking the same things….I need a good cookbook to add to the great ones I have for some variety to continue my feel good journey……oh and wait until my Rheumatologist gets a look at me in May loll

    I would love a copy! I started my plant-based lifestyle in June 2012. In February 2012, I went vegetarian and initially tried those 21-day vegan kickstarts for the health benefits and weight loss. After doing a second one, I realized when I went back to eating vegetarian, that I really missed eating vegan! Imagine the surprise lol. I can tell you (anybody who is more recently starting on the journey) that the cravings of grilled meats that once made your mouth water will wane over time. It’s kind of a victorious feeling when that happens. It’s not been easy, and there are a lot of critics out there, but I have faith 🙂 I have a family of 2 little boys and one big one who says he cannot live without meat, still. BUT he does support me. He does not chastise me in any way and he does at least attempt to like the plant-based foods that I make, some better than others. My dream is for my whole family to be plant-strong one day.     I think lots of raw food is working well for me. Most of the nutrients are preserved when the food is not heated. I eat some cooked sprouted grains and beans and occasional steamed of water-cooked vegetables. I do a lot of green juices and smoothies that are low-glycemic.

    My husband experienced his first issues just over a year and a half ago. I am constantly looking for better receipes that save time and money without having to purchase anything but straight up whole food, unrefined, etc. Burgers and fries are the ones I have NOT perfected yet and used to be a staple for us as we loved grilling outdoors, something we haven’t done now in almost two years. With the pool season coming, this would be a great addition to our list of menu items and would be a great addition to his recovery journey back to the “new normal” of living and eating health.     My husband and I started the 28 day challenge back in January with our local Whole Foods; we have never looked back and are feeling better every day and losing weight. My chloesterol has dropped from 191 to 153 and all my aches and pains have disappeared! YEAH! We have a 20 year old son that needs to make some changes and I would love to have Burgers and Fries to share with him. He is college and is not always making the best choices.

    My husband and I have given up soda, finally. We were both addicted to the sugar so much so that we sometimes went through a 12 pack in a couple of hours and our kids were getting hooked as well. Now we are on our way, and although he usually gives me a really hard time about trying new things he has agreed to at least taste them before refusing to eat it. I have already made some wonderful meals that we have all enjoyed. Now with summer coming, I still want to make “burgers” but they don’t have to be red meat or any meat. I love portobellos on the grill!

    I decide to go Plant strong to help my son with autism, After many hours of research, i have learn lowering the casein and gluten in his diet could help him. After only two weeks i have notice a big improvement in both my oldest son behavior and also in my youngest, he is calmer, happier and less irritable, not just in them either, I notice my own health improvement, no headache, way more energy and just all around better feeling. We are going plant strong for both mental and physical health.

    Whatthe heck I’l give it a shot. Last March 2012 I was sent home to enjoy what days I had left. Open heart and seven stents failed the last stent lasted 14 days, thank Gd for creating my own small bypass. I bought Dr Esselstyn’s book read on Thursday the 22nd and started plant based on Friday the 23rd of March 2012. At that time I was 285, had sleep apnena, barretts esophagus, GERDS, neuropathy along with the heart disease oh did I say taking 22 pills a day.I’m 6’5 222 now, blood work according to my doctor unbelievable. All of the above things have passed under the bridge and gone down stream thanks to the plant based lifstyle. Zero pills not even plavic which caused my Heart doctor to almost have a heart attack :). I would like the video but if not I do want to thank you for teaching me how to read lables how to shop and giving me fantasic meal ideas.

    My weight has spiraled out of control over the last 10 years and I am concerned about looming health related issues, not to mention suffering from anxiety attacks every night wondering if this was the night I would die of a heart attack or have a stroke. So, I set out following Dr Fuhrman’s Plant based Eat to Live with my husband joining me at the beginning of Feb. I can’t even begin to explain the peace of mind I have now falling asleep at night, I have lost 20 lbs and my husband 18 lbs. My energy has gone thru the roof, I feel so alive!

    I’m fortunate enough to have a husband who supports me in my vegetarianism. He’s very sweet about eating plant-based meals most days, but I know he still craves a burger and fries from time to time. I’ve tried a few recipes. Some were a hit (split pea burgers) some were not (a horrible oatmeal-based burger). I’d like to be able to find one he loves to have as a staple and maybe even convert him to giving up meat completely. That’s where he gets hung up- the “real” thing still being “better” than the substitute.

    OMG I would like one. It’s hard to please my husband, specially being from Poland, so I think providing a good “burger” would help my husband realize that it isn’t the meat that gives the good taste, it’s the seasoning put together.     Plant-based burger substitutes scare me because they are so often laden with soy (allergic).     My family an I have switched to a whole foods plant based diet on January 7th. I was motivated because I wanted to see if this way of eating would help me with my chronic pain from my autoimmune condition that I’ve been suffering with since 2008 and not getting any answers from doctors. My husband wanted to see if it would help his high cholesterol and blood pressure. Within 3 weeks, 95% of my pain was gone. The last blood pressure reading my husband had was normal. We are excited to get blood work done at our annual check ups. Anyways, I’d love this book because my favorite food before the switch was a cheeseburger and that’s the only thing I miss. If I could find some great alternatives, that would be perfect.

    I would love a copy because burgers and fries are one of my favorite foods and ones that used to get me in trouble before I discovered the plant-based way of eating. Growing up, I ate at many fast food establishments as often as my parents would let me. It was fast, easy, and cheap. Now I know how it was effecting me and why I was always heavy, even when I was somewhat active. Now I love plant-strong burgers and fries, but would love to learn more recipes than the few I have tried! I also think that I could help encourage others to eat this way if I made foods that were so common for people to love, but that they also think had to be unhealthy. Give me healthy burgers and fries and I am one happy camper!

    I’m 29 and was raisd by a meat eater and a vegitarian that meant no compromise so we ended up eating fast food every night. A “home cooked” meal was toast or cereal or plain speghetti. Everyone in my family has died too early of some form of heart disease or cancer. Now a stay at home mom of two I work hard at feeding them a whole foods organic plant based diet on a military family income. We eat 99% of our meals at home which means I live in the kitchen! I would love to have a quick reference to explore more recipes and to share with my family who is now becoming more interested in our way of life. My mom and I just ran our 1st 5K and I want to continue to encourage her on this path to great health!

    Practically every day, my 17 year old tells me that he had his dairy and meat fix at school (school lunches). He’s slowly adapting to our plant-strong diet at home. I’d love a copy of the cookbook, and promise that it will be well-used (notes written in it, post-its flapping out, probably some food stains from being too close to the cutting board and stove).

    I am a 41 year old woman with (total) cholesterol levels over 250 for the last 10+ years, and high LDL levels. I have tried things in the past to get it down, but it seems to stay around that mark probably due to my diet and extreme family history of heart disease. My father had his first heart attack at age 42 and has had 2 additional heart attacks and a sextuple bypass (and that’s just my father, I could go on and on). I have watched Forks Over Knives and was very convicted to change to a plant based diet but it only lasted for about 3 weeks. It is very hard with a young family to please everyone with menu choices and a plant based diet is not something my entire family is on board with. I would love to have a copy of this DVD as it seems like this is about as close to what my kids would call “normal food” as you can get with plant based. Thank you for the chance to win.

    I’ve been totally plant-strong for 3 1/2 years, but my husband isn’t. He HAS, however, been experimenting with making his own burgers using the Engine 2 recipe mixed in with another one or two.     I would love to win the video because I am surrounded by meat eaters, and I think they would watch a movie since they have many questions, but tell me they could never give up meat. Meanwhile, they take medication for different ailments and seem to always be unhealthy. I became vegan about a year ago, and have not been sick since!     I recently attended a plant based diet seminar, and during learned about Engine 2 Diet. After coming home, and doing a little research online, I took the plunge. It took a couple of weeks to find meal replacements, but I’m glad to say that I’m plant strong. I’m constantly searching for tasty recipes to incorporate into my diet, and burgers and fries are among my favorite meals to eat. Most of the burgers that I’ve made lack the flavor and consistency of store bought veggie burgers, however those are often high in fat and salt. I’ll stick to my whole food plant strong recipe search for now for the perfect burger. I’ve got a copy of this DVD ordered from the local library and I hope to find some delicious treats in it. On a side note, after 6 weeks on the plant strong diet, I am off of my blood pressure medications that I’ve been taking for 15 years. My blood pressure is better now off of the meds than it ever was on them. Thank you for the work you are doing.

    I turned 50 in January wanted to take better care of my self. My Husband is lactose intolerant and is always suffering from dairy being in foods. We watched DVD to help keep us inspired.     I just watched FOK last night. I stayed up extra late with my mind FILLED with so many thoughts.     I have several health issues which have improved a lot as a result of going vegetarian for the last year. Now after more research and learning I realize I need to go the whole mile and take it to vegan. ‘Trying’to be as ‘vegan as possible’ just doesn’t cut it – there’s always going to be an excuse for cheese, or butter or oil or eggs, it seems! I need more vegan recipe ideas at my fingertips so I have an immediate healthy response for those thoughts of ‘just this once won’t hurt’.

    Hi! I would really like to learn more from Jeff novicks books. About six doctors and a year and a half later, I was diagnosed with a number of food allergies, gluten intolerant, and fibromyalgia. I’m trying to learn and research foods that will help assist in healing and avoid certain foods that cause inflammation. So this would be a great starting point, seeing that a lot doctors (unless holistic) don’t know how to guide a patient using food to heal and get a number of vitamins/minerals along with other benefits.

    My dad died of esophageal cancer last January. During his illness, I read many books that advocated a plant strong diet to defeat cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. After watching what my dad went through, I want to avoid cancer at all costs. Since January 2012, my kids and I have lived a vegan lifestyle and feel great!

    I am on my weight loss journey, which has included learning more about going meatless. Currently I have lost over 100lbs, still needing to lose about 50 m ore.     Hubby & I took Jeff’s burgers to an employee BBQ party at the ski area where he teaches so we could have something to eat. (BBQ was brats, burgers, chicken). A couple of the maintenance guys saw our burgers on the grill and thought they looked great. We had extras so they tossed those on for them. They really liked the burgers. The BBQ guru just shook his head in dismay, he is a marinating, BBQ, meat loving guy.
    The videos are great to watch. I keep the .pdf recipe summary readily available for reference.

    We’re doing a lot better at our house since we went mostly plant strong. I say mostly because we’re still dealing with some crazy addiction issues (yup, I read the pleasure trap). But I really want to live a truely plant strong way. I saw Jeff at an imersion at the Esselstyn farm last August. I have a total crush on the guy. I love his style and I find him to be inspiring. I feel that this DVD will help reinforce a few things for us. And, I’m pretty certain my 2.5 y o son will love the DVD (he likes to help cook!). I haven’t attempted making my own plant burgers yet, and I would love to learn from the MASTER!

    Yesterday was my one year anniversary of being plant strong! I’ve lost 30 pounds (adding to a previously lost 80) and will never look back. I’ve never felt better! And at this point am about 40 pounds away from goal! I’d love one of Jeff’s DVD’s to broaden my cooking – especially in areas that will further entice my husband. He had gastric bypass 5 years ago because of escalating health issues, but has been slowly gaining back weight. He isn’t interested in going plant strong (yet) – happily calls himself a carnivore, and loves his meat. So I try to have different dishes available in the refrigerator to wean him to healthier eating, and it is making a difference. The other day he said loves the lentil loaf I make better than regular meat loaf! I think having healthy “burger and fry” meals will continue teaching him the health, well-being, and FLAVOR found in plant strong foods!

    I’m challeged with decreasing calorie density foods during the winter months. I also miss the texture of meat, but don’t want to get in the habit of eating a lot of the meatless offerings from the frozen food section. My lab values are ALL excellent. Thanks for all your help!!!

    Since going plant strong, I’ve lost 33 pounds since the end of July. My joints have stopped hurting. My hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder used to ache after chopping or stirring. I have energy to keep going all day. I took a trip to South Africa and my body didn’t ache after the 42 hours of travel. In the past couple of years I have felt very beat up after the trip, but not this time.

    I must have this to gift to my husband who went plant based, oil free 2+ months ago to reduce his cholesterol levels and more. (i joined him in this new way of life).
    The interesting part of his story is that he has been an award winning, competition barbequer for the past 5- years. All of our friends and his BBQ buddies know him as ” that” guy! We love educating our house guests and feeding them from our E2 recipes. Several have left our home and begun the same plant based journey. We even show them the movies Forks Over Knives and E2 Kitchen Rescue while feeding them yummy and healthy desserts in the evening.     My husband and I started plant based eating a year ago. My 16 yr old daughter resized she was primarily plant based and made the final transition 2 months ago.     As I age I’m seeing more & more family & friends battling illness. After being diagnosed with fatal liver cancer and given only 2 weeks to 2 months to live (a year and a half ago) I have changed my diet and started a health small group that meets monthly.     How do you makesure you are getting the protein.i have been on this a month and have lost some. I have been sick withflu like symptoms. I feel yukky.       Are you getting enough calories? You might have to eat more whole foods. Shouldn’t the protein content of plants be adequate? The protein in plant food is about the same as human breast milk. The typical Western diet has too much protein. What about B12 supplements? Unless you are eating plants pulled out of the soil, you are not getting B12, which affects energy level. Animals are able to make B12 from plants, but we can’t.

    It’s been 9 months of a TOTAL life change for this middle aged grandma and I am telling you I have never felt (or honestly looked) better! 47 pounds less of me !!
    This journey following the plant based lifestyle has been neither hard nor sacrificial! I did notice the caloric ups and downs Jeff mentions but the trick is not to judge yourself or get too discouraged as the body is WISE and always adjusting if you just follow the path!     For 40 years I’ve been a diabetic on 5 to 6 shots a day. At the age of 51, I had congestive heart failure requiring a 6 way bypass. You think I would have learned then. No, it took to the age of 72 before I wised up

    For the last few months I’ve been folling a plant food diet and feel wonderful. I was on two different insulins with 5 to 6 shots a day. Only on one type now with 2 shots per day. Soon I hope to be on none. I haven’t felt this good since in my 20’s. Thanks to everyone for posting all the information needed to continue down this path

    Over a year ago I found it impossible to ignore all my family members who had read Engine 2 and were changing their lives. I followed suit and for 5 months happily lived an ideal plant strong diet.     Since watching FoK first of the year, my 11 year old and I started our vegan journey or I should say our whole foods plant based journey. Because of the change in our diet he no longer invites friends over to play or spend the night because our food does not have meat in it like his friends foods. We have had great success in health areas- my husband is using 1/5 the amount of insulin, I’m off glucosamine for arthritis. We have both lost some weight but have leveled off.     I love Forks Over Knives! It was my intro into the world of healthy eating! I have shared my FoK DVD with my children, friends, and most recently my church pastor who recently had a stint implant. I have come to know Dr. Novick’s work and others since first seeing FoK. My Aunt is 88yrs young and takes no medication! However, since a fall this past December she is getting a bit forgetful. She lives alone and now eats a lot of heat and serve foods from the grocery store. I started stopping by to visit her every day at dinner time and have been preparing her dinner meals for her each day. I talk to her about a plant based diet and the benefits of cutting back on all the snacks and candy she has been recently treating herself to. She still likes her occasional hot dogs and heat and serve food but I do prepare a big salad with each dinner! I shared with her Dr. Barnard’s interview with Dr. Oz about foods that improve memory. I am trying to share with her all the good nutrition topics through media that I can. I would love a copy of this DVD to share with my Aunt and the girls at my knitting group as well! Thank you for all you relentless work you do and for dedicating your life to improving the lives of people all over the planet and the planet itself!

      I am currently trying to lose weight and am currently on Weight Watchers, I am interested in implementing a plant based diet, but I am not sure if I can do it and still enjoy eating, I think this book would help me try out some recipes and finally make the switch.

    Thanks for the insightful information. I have been on the plant strong program since July 2012. I now eat foods I haven’t eaten in over 40 years and a lot of new things. I am always for new information to educate myself with.

    Jeff’s first Fast Food DVD was and continues to be such a huge help when we changed our diet and lifestyle instantaneously over three years ago upon discovering what causes these terrible life-altering illnesses in our part of the world …and after losing two parents to cancer and nearly losing our 31 yr old daughter to that same dreadful malady. We both returned to normal size and blood work values in short order. Yay!
    Every month I hope to order Burgers and Fries since its release but every month come up short …would love to receive this gift DVD! It will get used plenty in our kitchen for sure!

    I would love this because I really want to make my own burgers, but they always just fall apart. One time when I made burgers my daughter called them sand. Tasty, but the texture was like sand. I would really like to get away from buying and eating processed fake “meats”.

    Thanks for the ideas… I have been vegetarian for about 30 years and recently decide to remove the dairy and eggs. Two weeks ago I did a “detox” week – of fruits and vegetables – I felt great! This prompted me to remove all the processed foods from my life. I am enjoying how these changes make me feel. The website and blogs are very helping me learn the healthy way to fuel my body. Thank You!!

    I’ve been converting to a plant-strong lifestyle over the last 8 to 10 weeks…ever since I read Forks Over Knives and E2. The only problem…I’m gaining weight! After reading your article today, I think I understand why…too much dry cereal and too many seeds and nuts. Now, I will follow your advice and see if I don’t some results at last. Thanks, Jeff!

    Wow! Just reading this short article provided a wealth of information. I can only imagine how informative the DVD would be. I’m losing weight but implementing the information in the article should help me get past my current plateau-14 pounds.

    I just signed up yesterday for the farm2fork weekend in August in NYS. I can’t wait. I came across information about Jeff on the internet today and remembering that he will be one of the speakers at f2f, I was interested in learning about him. I am interested in going to school for nutrition, so I enjoyed reading his bio about how he came to the nutrition field after having a career as a chef and working for Kraft Foods. Now here he is on Engine2. I look forward to reading his weekly column.

    I have just started to incorporate a whole foods plant based diet into my life. I am moderately obese and look forward to that weight coming off. I have lost five pounds so far. I am also trying to encourage a friend who is severely overweight, taking high blood pressure medication and is prediabetic. I really see how it is live saving to adopt a whole foods plant based diet. I.am still learning how to make good food choices and would love to win a copy of Jeff’s DVD. Thank you.

    I really appreciate being able to eat freely w/o counting calories and losing weight. And the food is quite delicious. For some reason I am quite inventive about ways to put foods together, which I was not on the SAD

    My husband and I have just watched forks over knives. We were both taken back by what we watched. I challenged my husband to go meat free for one week. I feel great so far. Our week is not done yet we still have 4 days left. He feels great to but is still on the verge of continuing to eat meat. He is a type 1 diabetic high blood pressure and takes cholesterol meds. Would love to see this burgers and fries so i can make new delicious new foods so he will like them and we can stay a plant based family. I have 2 kids also one who is gluten free.

    I cannot wait to win your DVD (positive thinking!) for a couple of reasons…
    My husband was diagnosed the day before our son got married with Non- hodgkins lymphoma, stage 4. I always thought that we were healthy eaters but knew we could improve. I started to research better ways to eat and came across the Engine 2 book and have never looked back. Vernon was in remiission for 22 months but sadly was hit by the news last week that his cancer has returned. I need to kick his diet up a notch once again and believe that your DVD will teach me even more about nutrition and get Vernon back in to remission.
    Personally, I need to lose weight as I am an emotional eater and have turned to the wrong foods since Vernon’s diagnose, so I know that not only will my hubby benifit from your DVD but so will I! 🙂
    I attended Rip’s seminar in Davie, Florida a couple of months ago and found him to be so unbelievabley motivating just as I know you will be!

    My husband has a precancancerous condition. After watching FoK, we have been plant strong for over a year. I like to cook, but lately have found myself in a soup/stew rut and would love to bust out with some new ideas!

    Approximately a year ago I took responsibility for my health. This was a tough decision seeing that I was raised with doctors knowing everything (well credits: they are educated). But so can individuals. The research is out there. At that same time I got off processed foods, back to healthy fats and homemade/cooked foods. My stomach fat melted and I have managed to maintain my weight. My main purpose was to reduce my blood pressure and cholesterol. Interesting concept for me was my body makes cholesterol and if I give it the right stuff why should I take a pill to reduce something my body makes naturally. Hmmmm. I love the aha! moments when a link is made with something I had previsouly read. I now listen to my body, it tells you a lot if you listen to it. I am still on a quest to gain more knowledge – responsibility is constant.

    It is time to break the cycle that our family is on and I need to be a better role model for my grandchildren who are 12 and 13. Jeff’s DVD is something that I will be able to share with them and if they only walk away with one thing to do differently it is a start. I’m turning 68 next month and because of Engine 2 and Forks I am living a new lifestyle. I always juiced but two months ago I started plant based and it was the best decision I have made for my life.     I’m a whole foods vegetarian for 25 years. In the old days, we made burgers from lentils or brazil nuts or grains, but now that we have the option of store bought veggie burger, my health & family health has suffered. So much for the “new days!” Please help me go back & start over!

    I love the plant based diet I discovered from the Engine 2 Diet book. I also work for a emergency response state agency, Cal Fire in California. We have a fitness coordinater in our unit and I shared with him some of the content of this book as possibly something we would like to use in our fitness efforts. I began my plant based diet journey 10 weeks ago as well as juicing as a meal replacement for all the added nutrients as well as part of my weight loss goal. I have lost
    16 pounds and feel so energetic and healthy! I also excersise 5 – 6 timrs per week for about an hour per session including cardio, weights and yoga. I am so excited about how I look and feel that I recommend this lifestyle change to anyone who will listen. In fact, I am now considering earning a certification in nutrition so that I can officially spread the good news! Thanks for being part of the solution!

    I’ve been plant strong for a little of 2 years and can cook awesome paella, gumbo, jambalaya, cacciatore, stir-fry’s etc. I’ve been striking out with burgers and fries though and it doesn’t seem to improving. I’ve hijacked many recipes and their all still *meh*. Frozen veggie burgers taste like do-do plus they’re filled with tons of stuff I can’t pronounce. Please?

    I must have Jeff’s Burger and Fries book. After deciding to go plant base I feel great and I’m seeing changes in not only in how my clothes fit but my energy level is through the roof. I thought that this past holiday would have been difficult and it was not bad at all. Jeff you have taught me so much about what food do to our body’s both positive and negative I have to learn more.     I would love to have a good vegie burger and fries and win the DVD. I started the vegan diet 1 month ago to lower my 374 cholestrol and experience a new healther lifestyle for myself and my seven grandkids. I’ve lost 14 pounds and just had my blood tested again today. Can’t get my husband to give up meat and dairy, but I feel great and don’t miss my old diet. It’s fun learning how to cook all over again.

    I am happy to say that after more than a year of my daughter urging me to watch FOK I gave in and have been plant strong since the New Year. Besides the energy and sleeping through the nights that had returned to me, I had no idea the extra weight I had carried around for the last 7 years following a surgery would just come off. Since I am now at an ideal weight I have to make sure I eat enough high calorie density foods in my diet to maintain. I purchased FOK (movie) and pass it around to encourage friends and family to watch it. Without the education the movie offers, it is really a hard concept for some to understand and grasp. The movie is powerful. What a great lifestyle change for me and for so many others!

    I really want this fast food book. I have been plant based for two months and going strong. This is it for me, the rest of my life. I’m not trying this, this is who I am.
