Saving Time with Char

Flavored Water…The New Beverage

They say that “time is money.”  On a recent trip to the grocery store, I was intrigued with the vast collection of fruit and herb infused waters.  The beauty of the labels will alone draw you to the shelf, and once you learn that you can drink water infused with lavender, the bottle is in your cart.  In fact, more than one bottle will be in your cart.  And, at the price of $1.49 for a 16 ounce bottle, well, this is where the time and money thing come together.

If you have about fifteen minutes, you can create some amazing waters that will last you for a week.  Aside from saving loads of time, you will save loads of money.  Plus, it is really fun to create fun and new beverages that are a reflection of things that you like!   No sugar, no preservatives, all natural, in the best of ways.

Let’s define the art of infused water making into two categories.  Supplies and Ttechnique.   And, really, it is easy and fun!  I have to admit that I have become very attached to Ball® jars, and  have quite a collection.  They are perfect for using when you  infuse waters.

Supplies:

  1. Six, 16 ounce glass jars.  If you use bottled pasta sauce, these leftover jars  are fabulous for your infused waters.  I also love using Ball® jars, but more about that later.
  2. A “muddler,” is used to crush fruits and herbs.  When you “muddle,” you allow the flavors to integrate with the water and you get amazing flavors, and quickly.
  3. If you are using herbs (spearmint leaves, basil, romsemary, etc.,), I like to snip them into smaller pieces.
  4. Your favorite fruits and herbs.  If you are using the skin, I would suggest using organic product.  Same for the herbs
  5. Buy a gallon of spring water, or if you have a water filter system, that is fine, too.

I like to use lime, lemon, oranges, grapefruit, carrots, cucumbers, basil, rosemary, lavender, assorted berries, oh, and I cannot forget, GINGER.  I love ginger.

Technique:

  1. Sort your fruits, veggies and herbs.  Rinse as needed.  Decide how you’d like to begin.  As a beginner, you might want to start simply, and just go with something basic like cucumbers and mint.
  2. Add a given amount of fruit or herb to the bottom of your jar.  With the muddler, gently press and grind the fruit…break them up, not mash them.  For starters, you might want to begin with crushed berries and a citrus fruit.
  3. Cover to the top with ice cubes.  Then, add water, ¾ of the way.  Cover and place in the fridge.
  4. I prefer to label the tops of each jar.
  5. Another favorite is a mélange of lime, orange and grapefruit.  Just hits the spot.  Oh, and grapefruit and rosemary is another favorite, the best you will drink!
  6. You can drink from the jar, or transfer to a glass.  Up to you!

Some people like to strain their waters, but I enjoy and love the color and fruit remnants.  When I am finished, I grab a spoon and eat the fruit.  I also LOVE the colors that are created.  Nature’s colors pack a punch of vitamins for you!

Here’s the best part about making your own infused waters:

-When you buy ready-made water, six bottles will cost almost $9.00.

-Make your own?  Pennies to the dollar.

-Your carbon footprint is greatly reduced, as you are recycling jars and NOT buying plastic ones.

-Having a party?  Let your guests make their own mixtures.  Create a “fruit and herb” bar and tap into your inner mixologist!

How I Like my Waters:

A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a product called the CUPPOW®.  They are made in Massachusetts, and what they are you ask?  A special adapter top for a Ball® jar.  When you apply the Cuppow® top, it makes your jar into an adult “sippy” cup.  I love them and use them all the time.  Great grab and go for the car.  Great to take to work.  They make the perfect travel container, and really, you are being a great environmental steward by using Cuppow® and your old Ball® jars.

For more info about the Cuppow®, go to www.Cuppow.com to place an order.  They are amazing people.  And, I cannot stop ordering the Cuppow® because I am drinking lots of infused waters that are packed with flavor and vitamins!

NOTE:  CUPPOW® HAS MADE A SPECIAL PROMO JUST FOR E2 readers!  Order any amount of Cuppow®, use the code ENGINE2DIET, and you will receive a 10% discount on your order!  ALL ORDERS MUST BE PLACED BEFORE  MIDNIGHT , Friday, May 10.

You’ll be saving loads of time.  Let me hear from you.  Do you have a favorite infused water that you like?

Bottom’s up!

Great use of canning jars and love that they are made in the USA!

  • Marianna DeGarmo

What a great idea! Cuppow would let me take my drink with me in the car…I never take my drink to go unless I have a lid and / or a straw, because I will inevitably spill it on myself if I don’t have one or the other! I am also very jealous of your blue Heritage Ball jars. I have been drooling over them for some time now :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/isabelle.groleau.5 Isabelle Groleau

I would love to have a cuppow to take my juice or green smoothie on the go!

  • Darander

I’d love a Cuppow! We use jars around the house for a lot of things. I would love to be able to take them as a travel cup.

  • Tiffany

I want to start making my own infused water. It’s cheaper than buying it and I would save by using less plastic bottles. the cuppow would be perfect to have, especially to keep my daughter from spilling her water all over the place.

  • Kirsten

I love all your ideas…the Cuppow sounds interesting! Thanks for sharing :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/tammy.lucas.92 Tammy Lucas

We all need to drink more water – this would be an incentive to do so!

  • Tory

I’ve been meaning to try to make some of my own flavored/infused waters for some time as well. I really struggle getting enough water in each day and think this would be a great way to up my intake (plus, I’m sure my kids would want to join in on the fun – bonus for setting a good example for them)! As for the Cuppow – how cool! I have a ton of canning jars hanging out in my kitchen – what a great way to make use of them after they’re emptied.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Marji-Bickel-Eismont/728160080 Marji Bickel Eismont

This is the coolest idea – would be great for carrying spring water instead of having to use the chemical infested water at the places I work at.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lou.daviesjames Lou Davies James

Anything to make drinking more healthful water is great. This makes it fun as well!! Love the idea~

  • Kate

I’ve been wanting to try a Cuppow lid. I’m hoping it will encourage me to drink more water while on the go. Thanks!

  • Kyle Lahm

In the south we are loaded with mason jars, I’ve been using an old fashioned pitcher for my cucumber mint water but that cuppow would sure make my water on the go a lot easier!

  • sfbayou

Great idea, but what’s a muddler?

  • April

I tried making infused water once but don’t think I did it correctly. Will definitely try again. Thanks!

  • http://www.facebook.com/kathy.mclean.31 Kathy McLean

i have tried lemon & lime. apple & berry. That is a great idea using the pasta jars, I also have a hot sauce jar that would be perfect. I love the Cuppow. And yes, what is a muddler?

  • http://www.facebook.com/lisa.besse Lisa Besse

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1161432094 Jennifer Heatherly

I would love a cuppow cow to use as an ice breaker to conversations about healthy eating/drinking lifestyle! It is an awesome design and definitely something that would catch other peoples attention here in Cali :)

  • Jeff

I used to spend $1-$3 on “healthy” waters. Now I just drink regular water or seltzer but miss the flavors. This sounds like a great idea. Can’t wait to try!

    Jeff Hoyt

  • Tricia Elsen

I would love a Cuppow because I refuse to buy bottled water and carry all my beverages from home. Right now I am drinking from a ball jar without a cuppow, and spilling on myself in the car. Please pick me :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/diana.scantlin Diana Leigh

I am currently on day 6 of a 40-day juice fast. Although I have quite a collection of Ball jars, I only have straws for drinking out of them, which is very clumsy when traveling. The Cuppow would allow me easily to take my juices to meetings and classes, running errands… just about anywhere!

  • Donnajmm

I’ve never heard of a Cuppow! It would inspire me to make the flavored waters. It’s nice to look at and seems spill proof, which is good for me. I’d love to have one.

  • Polly

I would like a cup pow because I have been taking my sister in law to have radiation treatments & I never know what they are gonna do with her . I spend hours waiting for her & sometimes just 20 minutes waiting for her. I take her to run errands and pay bills so I get tired of just plain water. I DON’T want to purchase sodas so it does get costly buying bottled water for three sometimes. This would really help if I can just pop one of the cup pow’s on a ball jar and drive on. Even make some for her & our mother we carry with us. Thanks for the ideas on the different fun waters. I can’t wait to make some for us!

  • http://twitter.com/kyleplattner Kyle Plattner

I love it to give to my wife for Mothers day!

  • Theresa

I would love a Cuppow because I am tired of spilling my water on me as I drive to work. I use a stainless bottle for my car ride and it never fails that i spill…le sigh

  • http://www.facebook.com/lmhumphrey2 Linda Mittag Humphrey

I love infused waters and I need one of these so its easier to drink!!! Simple as that!

  • Deb B.

  • Kelley

We have plastic water bottles, and I was just researching about alternatives. The Cuppow sounds great!

  • http://www.facebook.com/debbie.deisher.3 Debbie Deisher

Cuppow!! what a concept! I enjoy drinking out of glass the most and use jars a lot! It would be so groovy to have a way to not spill all over me when I drink from them in the car and stuff! Great conversation starter, but I already get asked what’s in the jar a lot when I do fruits! so cool!

  • http://www.facebook.com/tracygordon7 Tracy Herndon Gordon

The cuppow sounds awesome! WE need to have it!

  • http://twitter.com/NutritiousFood ReluctantVegetarians

Do you have any retailers in Ontario, Canada?

  • Plntstrngchoice

  • http://www.facebook.com/kristen.herrera Kristen Herrera

  • http://www.facebook.com/laura.v.kidman Laura Voss Kidman

Great way to get daily dose of water. Not to mention… would probably be better than letting the water or smoothie that I usually drink dribble down my chin every time, like it currently does… just sayin’

  • http://www.facebook.com/ruth.m.dunn.3 Ruth Mizell Dunn

I take my green smoothie or flavored water to work with me daily. Pouring out of a jar into a cup at my desk can get a bit messy. What a great idea! Do they come in wide mouth as well as regular?

  • melanie

I would love to have a cuppow because one I am a huge juicer..use my mason jars daily. It would be nice to make them more portable. Nothing worse then having spinach juice fly on you ( this has happened before and it wasn’t pretty). 2nd of all its reusable product which I am all about. And 3rd I pre orderd my beef with meat. Have the 1st book..and love Mr. Rip!..:)

Another great idea Char and a wonderful product. We are always working on ways to cut down on our carbon footprint and find that we now recycle more than we throw away, but are always looking for ways to cut back on that waste also. I have some old Ball jars that I love such a beautiful shade of green. Are the ones you show old or new?

I have several Cuppows already, but this looks like a new style I’d like to try. By the way, WHERE does one find a ‘muddler,’ or what can one use in place of one? (I’m thinking the mortar from my large mortar and pestle).

  • Helen

I would love a Cuppow to get more uses out of my jars!

  • Beverly Perry

I am going to try infused waters. I drink lots of water and will be trying infused water. Having a cuppow to drink my water would be fantastic.

  • Lori B

This sounds great. Thanks for sharing!! Can’t wait for My Beef with Meat!

  • Linda Fulmer

I’m falling in love with mason jars! Simply putting lemon juice in water does not appeal to me, I’d rather have it plain. Have thought about experimenting with infused water, can’t wait to try this method. My favorite: cantaloupe and cucumber (just pieces in the water or frozen like iced cubes), mmmmm.

  • http://twitter.com/chris_migton Chris Migton

This is such a great idea! I’d like to win a Cuppow to eliminate my dependence on plastic, spill prone reusable water bottles.

  • BH

Perfect in every way! I drink way more water when flavored. I just bought a water infuser pitcher system at a warehouse store, but it’s plastic and I wasn’t so sure I wanted to drink from plastic a bunch. Haven’t opened it yet. It’s going back. All the MORE reason I’d love a Cuppow! Perfect timing for this post. Thanks!!!

  • Debby

Saw Rip and Jane and the gang at the Healthy You Network Symposium this past weekend in Tucson. Fabulous weekend! Can’t wait to get started. The new book is on its way and now all I need is a Cuppow! Please!!!

Great idea! Why didn’t I think of that?

  • http://www.facebook.com/anne.araullo Anne Araullo

  • http://www.facebook.com/sarah.j.moore.165 Sarah Moore

These look great and no plastic cup! We love seltzer water and make it with a soda stream at home. Now I can get fancy with the waters too. I have herbs in the garden.

  • Anita

What a great idea. I just had lunch at a sandwich joint that served an infused water. I think it was cucumber, mint and lemon. It was great! I’m definitely going to try this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000121727399 Lisa Taylor

How long do you feel these will stay good in the fridge? Like 24 hrs or a few days? Thanks!

  • Penny Bange

What an excellent idea! I have my Mason jar ready…

  • Janet

What a great use for Mason jars. Count me in!

  • Elle

This might be a really silly question but do I have to somehow cut out the whole on my jar lids to be able to attach the cuppow?

  • Gail

I am getting ready to start a 10 day juice fast, a cuppow would make it a lot easier to travel with my drinks. I just read to not drink “juice” through a straw so a sipper cup would be great!

My father collected ball jars and I have at least 30 jars at my house. I would love to try the cuppow.

My husband and I are six weeks now on plant-based eating and loving it. The Cuppow would be another great way to increase our nutrition and give us variety in our drinks as well as the colorful foods we now eat!! We sell the “Forks over Knives” and “Engine 2 Diet” videos and books by telling everyone how much better we feel. Help me add to my new kitchen equipment by letting me win a “Cuppow”!!

Love the idea of an environmentally friendly and healthy option for taking drinks along. I can various things and have extra canning jars.

Our family, including little ones love drinking out of Ball jars. This would make it so much easier. We would love this.
