Go Plant-Strong!
The Daily Beet: Tips, Advice and Stories

“I turned 63 years old in October and my body is feeling lighter, cleaner as a result of the Engine 2 Diet.”

Dear Rip,
Your book was one of a number I purchased and read in my search for a weight loss program for my husband. But after I had abnormal results on a stress test, my cardiologist wanted to put me on statin drugsand recommended an angioplasty and stents to open possible blockages.  I asked my doctor to give me a two month grace period and then went home and pulled your book off the shelf.  Exactly 8 weeks later I went back to have my second blood test to review my cholesterol levels.  I learned that as a result from my dietary changes my cholesterol had dropped from 266 to 203, 63 points!  My LDL has also dropped 44 points from 180 to 136!  Let me add that I considered myself a healthy eater.  I was never a big meat eater and almost never ate beef or pork.  A typical meal for us was a green salad and a chicken breast or spinach spaghetti with ground turkey.  Of course, I was told that my high cholesterol was genetic because of  my family’s history of heart disease and that I could not control it.  On my next visit the cardiologist stated the I did not need statin drugs and advised me to keep doing what I was doing.  Today, on my second visit since I started the Engine 2 Diet, my EKG was normal.  In light of the fact that on my last visit it showed that I had an extra heartbeat, this is amazing!
As a tall women, 6′ 1″ and 184 lbs. I was not considered overweight.  I could not be happier that a bonus from the Engine 2 diet is that 25 lbs. just melted off!  I am amazed that I have not had any cravings and rarely feel hungry although I eat less (I am no longer snacking all the time).  I have not been 157 lbs for over 10 years!  I turned 63 years old in October and my body is feeling lighter, cleaner as a result of the Engine 2 Diet.  My husband has also lost 15 lbs. just from following your diet meals when he is at home.  Thank you for mainstreaming being plant-strong!

Karen, that is an awesome story! I am so happy for you. I, too, have a plethora of books lining my shelves that I’ve bought over the years in an on-going desire to improve and maintain my health. Some of them I still refer to, but none has had the lasting impact of Engine 2. To be fair, I also went to an E2 Immersion in Austin, Texas, and that really convinced me that this is the way of life for me. It didn’t hurt that at my subsequent doctor’s visit 6 weeks later, ALL of my numbers had improved. I was in ‘good’ health already, but comparing my physical results with the previous year, my doctor said “last year you were good, this year you’re fabulous!” She also encouraged me to keep up the new approach to food, and we had a lengthy discussion about what exactly had changed in my life. She even asked me to send her the information on E2 and Dr. Esselstyn’s Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease book. It really is empowering and transformative information. Take it to heart!

      Rachel,
Congratulations to you for jumping into the plant strong diet. Everyone I tell about my results also wants more information about the plant strong diet. Congratulations too on your good report! My cardiologist tells me, “You are disgustingly healthy for a woman your age.” Let’s stay plant strong and “fabulous” together!

Way to go Karen. What a wonderful story and it’s wonderful that you had the courage to change instead of taking a bunch of medications.

Congratulations Karen on taking a proactive approach to your health. Who knew that ‘medicine’ could taste so good?

I’ll turn 63 this year also and just began the plant-strong diet a few months ago. Your story has encouraged me to keep going until I too have that kind of results! Thanks for sharing.

    • Karen

      Alta,
I can only encourage you to keep going! All my numbers improved but I also feel and look younger since beginning the Engine 2 diet. Our bodies love a plant strong diet and the results will manifest themselves in many different ways.
