Good afternoon Ann and Elaine,
Well thank you.
The name comes from Highland Bowl, at Aspen Highlands ski area. Each week in the winter I go hike the bowl a few times. It's a beautiful place, nothing else like it. I just love it.
I'm going to start filming my wife's recipes and put them up on the web. As soon as I get the time, I'm going to have a blog. According to my wife, this way of eating is not only healthy, it's less expensive. So I'd like to spread the word.
For example there's a direct tie-in here to insurance rates. Insurance rates are based on a pool. The insurance company looks at all the health profiles and claims in your geographical area to base their rates on. So if you live in an area with high rates of obesity or heart surgeries, you're going to pay more for insurance. Of course the insurance company will never admit to this specifically.
Conversely, if the insurance company sees lower rates of obesity and heart surgeries, then maybe they'll lower rates? I have no proof to say they would, but it certainly makes sense.
Call me crazy, liberal, whatever. But I believe we're in charge. And I believe that change takes place from the inside out.
As I said to Los. I don't care if Dr. E and Rip are wrong about a few things. Maybe they are, but I think not. I know their message is right on and I'm happy to support them. I could be wrong, but I'd bet anyone a cup of coffee that they're in this for the right reasons.

Your comment about Rip and Dr. E being in this for the right reasons really resonated with me. When I met them at the immersion in Sept. the thing that struck me the very most was the sincerity that just exudes from them. It is so very obvious.
At the end I was chatting with Rip and I told him that one thing at the immersion I was most impressed with was that they didn't try to sell us anything. Believe me, at that point we would have followed them anywhere, shelled out money for anything they wanted to sell us. But…they didn't take advantage of that.
We practically had to beg them to bring out books for people who wanted autographs and didn't have books with them. When they did finally bring them out they were out of the main view, off in the corner.
After I said to Rip that this was so impressive to me, his eyes got a bit misty and he said – that's not what we are in this for. We want to help people get healthy.
These men are selling hope and a solid plan for better health.

Ann,
Thanks so much for sharing you immersion story. I think if I had gone to Dr. Esselstyn's web site (http://www.heartattackproof.com/) after my first viewing of Forks Over Knives, and had seen a bunch of suppliments being sold, or gimicky stuff, I probably would have turned away without further investigation. I'm so glad to hear that they seem to be doing this for the reasons, I had hoped. Not that is Rip were to come out with a line of food products, I would be upset. I had once discounted Dr. McDougall, because he had food items for sale through his web site. I realize now that offering those foods really is needed service for us on this WOE.

Good morning,
I have no problem with them becoming rich. But, Dr. E looks like he's already doing well. So I don't think making big money is a lure for him. I'm sure he'll take it, but I'll bet my last dollar that's not his M.O.
I remember Rip from the old days, the first days, in Triathlon. Now to see him this many years later doing this, it's clear where his heart is. He's finally found a way to get paid for what he loves, good for him. Same example, I'm sure he'll cash the checks. But I'll bet what really turns him on is the thought of how many lives he's affecting.
As this gets bigger, some of us will feel left behind. I hope that doesn't happen, but if it does, no one should worry. For me, I'll always remember the key point, which is that I'm healthier because of this. I don't want to shut the door behind me — I want to open it for others.
McDougal. I actually have a complaint about them. Maybe enough to start a new post about it — I think I will. Here's my gripe. They make a big deal out of being "Green". But, none of their packaging is compostableor recyclable, because it all has the coating on the packaging. So yes, maybe they are using recycled materials. But then they're recreating trash, because their containers aren't compostable or recyclable.
I've called three times and tried to get to management about it. They hang up on me. I bought stuff from them and I do now, only because their oatmeal makes for great traveling. But I don't like that company, at all.

Hi BowlHiker – just thought I would mention that Dr. Mcdougall sold the rights to his food products company years ago – he is not involved with it at all, as I understand.

Hi Doug,
I wonder if the reason you are having trouble is that like me you are very literal and that you need to get everything figured out before you can start–down to the last detail. I find it very hard to get started on something new because of that. So I have a suggestion–stop reading the front of the book and trying to figure it out and jump in on the 28 day challenge and just follow the recipes without trying to figure it all out with what was said in the front of the book. Drop worrying about the rules and just make the recipes. And chill–you're making it harder than it needs to be. Hope I haven't offended you by telling you to chill–friends have had to tell me that too.
I guess maybe though I would follow the suggestion the E2 team made–just concentrate on breakfast at first. And then go on to trying the recipes. And start small. Don't do all 28 days–just do half of them. Set your goal lower so you can see some progress. And I like what some others have said–try out some of the vegan/vegetarian restaurants the happycow website lists, and talk with the chefs about where to buy the products. And don't forget to send off for your products like others have suggested.
Best of luck to you!!

Have you tried making your own bread? The book Healthy Bread in 5 minutes a Day has a great recipe for easy 100% whole wheat bread that really does take just minutes a day.
Sometimes, to take care of yourself, you just have to jump in and do it yourself. It can be hard but it can also be liberating.
