I've been eating plant-strong since October 2011 and had my yearly physical last week.  Got the blood work results in the mail today and had to brag a bit Laugh!

I only lost 12 lbs. since last year this time, but I saw some key numbers come down:

  • Total Cholesterol:  Last year, 139; currently 132.
  • HDL:  Last year, 32; currently 40.
  • LDL:  Last year, 57; currently 65.
  • Triglycerides:  Last year, 252 (ouch); currently 145 (yaaa!).

Hit the Engine 2 heart attack proof trifecta; total cholesterol < 150; LDL < 80; Triglycerides < 150!

I still have a way to go with weight (need to lose another 16 lbs.) but I'm so psyched to see positive results.  Training for my first triathalon in June so that should get me well on my way.

Great way to head into a plant-strong Superbowl Weekend!

Thank you Rip and the Engine 2 Team!  I'm glad I got to meet Rip when he came to North Carolina this past Fall; your team needs to come back soon.

Good morning Kevin,

You're on fire! Way to go.

I got my last bloodwork done after some binge eating over the holidays, so that probably has to do with why mine were higher. I got to get some consulting on this. Maybe I'm drinking too much Almond Milk? Hmm.

Anyway, not robbing your stoke. It's really cool to see the results, eh?

Congrats again,

Congratulations!

I started day after Thanksgiving 2011. 322 lbs, 59 years old, diabetic on pump, taking pills for BP, cholesterol, triclycerides.

Today, 2/4/2012, weigh in at 280 lbs. (have not started exercise yet..next week! Ugh!), here are some numbers:

BP  was 120/80 with two pills (Coreg and Accupril)  now 97/59 with half the pills

Resting BP was 99                                             now 68

Total Cholesterol  156 (with Tricor and Crestor)  now 109 with half the pills.

LDL was 101                                                      now 49

HDL was 17                                                       now 29 (Need exercise)

Triclycerides 179                                                now 156

Insulin  285 units daily                                        now 65 units daily

A1C was 7.5                                                      now 5.9  (arterial glucose was 69! )

Frankly, love the food.  Not using any oils, nuts, avocado…but veggies, fruits and limited whole grain pasta…oatmeal is my breakfast or Rips Bowl, Lunch is salads, wraps with Hummus, Fruit, supper is gourmet delight!  (My Wife is learning all the engine 2 meals along with Dr E book meals…

I am a bit disappointed at my HDL.  Hoping for much better…really not sure what to expect.  Weight loss dramatic.  Went from a 54 inch waist to a 46 inch waist.  People are noticing:)

See my cardio doc on the 29th…guess I will see how he feels and hope to be below 280 by then….

Am I expecting too much change from my blood so soon?  Really hope to get my HDL above 39 asap!  Guess exercise will be the key along with the diet….btw, all other blood specs are well within range.EmbarassedEmbarassedEmbarassed

You don't have to worry about low HDL because your total is very low. HDL is part of the total cholesterol number. To  have your HDL be higher the total has to go up too.

If your Dr. worries about low HDL when your total is only 107 it proves he doesn't have much correct information and deals with folks who have "normal" Cholesterol numbers of about 190.

Here is a link to what Rip's dad says about low HDL numbers.  The Low HDL question is down near the bottom

Wow! Really great numbers RW. I wouldn't worry about the HDL being low.

In his book, Dr. E says "Our research suggests, in fact that lower than "normal" HDL levels are not worrisome as long as total cholesterol is well within the safe range—under 150…"

Are you a Type-1 diabetic?

WOW–these are such exciting posts to read!  I don't have a diabetic issue or high blood pressure, but my cholesteral is 240.  I am considered to be "low risk" because of the combined other numbers (can't remember what they are) and my c-reactive protein is 1.2.  My daughter asked me why I am eating this way as she thinks I am healthy and fit and don't have a weght problem.  I told her that I want to do whatever I can to have an "edge" as I get older.  I am 58 years old, survived breast cancer twice in my 30's and do have osteopenia.  Who knows, maybe I can stave off osteoporosis with this style of eating and anything else that may have been lurking around the corner.  Do love the food!

Update:  My numbers have all gone down 5 points.  ONthe 29th the Doctors were blown away.  My A1C down to 5.1.

Needless to say, I am committed!  Ray
