Howdy,

I started this lifestyle change on 9-1-11.

I've had a physical each year for the past 5 years or so. Here's the numbers:

1. 7-18-05

Cholesterol, Serum = 247

HDL Cholesterol = 61

LDL = 169

Triglycerides = 87

2. 5-2-06

Cholesterol, Serum = 221

HDL Cholesterol = 64

LDL = 169

Triglycerides = 130

3. 11-17-08

Cholesterol, Serum = 180

HDL Cholesterol = 62

LDL = 101

Triglycerides = 121

4. 11-25-09

Cholesterol, Serum = 209

HDL Cholesterol = 61

LDL = 122

Triglycerides = 121

So as you can see, my numbers weren't alarming. Or as my doctor told me today, "Not so high that I'd put you on something". But then again, not the numbers we know to be healthy.

During this time I was still eating the old way. I'd make a few changes now and then, get "healthier", which for me meant eating organic burgers and drinking skim milk. My weight would fluctuate between 215ish to 208. I'm 52, 6'2". We've always ate "healthy", or should I say what advertising has convinced us — as eating healthy. 

On 9-1-2011 I had my bloodwork done:

Cholesterol, Serum = 209

HDL Cholesterol = 66

LDL = 122

Triglycerides = 78

I can't recall my exact weight, but I'd guess it was 208 to 210.

On 1-24-12, after 5 months** of living this way, here are the numbers:

Drum roll….

Cholesterol, Serum = 171

HDL Cholesterol = 61 (it went down, which I don't understand. Progress, not perfection)

LDL = 89

Triglycerides = 106

**Progress not perfection. Eh, I had some binge eating over the holidays — candy for Halloween, turkey and stuffing on Thanksgiving, ham at xmas. But the stuffing was E2 and the turkey was a fancy turkey from Vitamin Cottage. The ham was organic something or other. So that helps, right? Wink Did I mention my wife's fudge? Throw in a few slices of pizza at the bowling alley. But even so, I was still 90% on. Would I have got kicked out of Dr. E's test cases? Yep.

But even so, my friends look at the way I eat as radical. Aside from the binge time over the holidays, I'm back on; no dairy, no meat, no oil, nada. All of what we eat comes from recipes from here, or something my wife came up with on her own from reading the books. My Vitamin Cottage bill has gone way up — and that's a good thing!

No doubt about it, I'm healthier than ever. I feel great, I'm hiking Highland Bowl better than ever. 

Looking at the numbers, I'm happy. But I can do better and I'm working on it. I've still got some weaknesses, but I've made huge strides. One day at a time. But I love living this way and I'm not going back. I have so many reasons to live this way and I enjoy being different. It fits well with me.

Changing my life to eat this way, well, it hasn't been easy. In fact it's been hard. Like so many, I see a pizza and go…eat it. Food plays tricks on my mind and in my body. Instead of fighting that, I'm learning how to manage it. Without my wife, who believes in what I do…well, I'm not going to say I couldn't have done it, but she's made a helluva difference. It's just so much better to have my partner in this with me. Never mind that I can't cook. So yeah, I have an advantage.

And it's sure fun to see the results in black and white — and in my body. My belly fat is gone, that feels great. Today I'm 185, a solid 34" waist, down from a 36 — or at times, a 38. 

You know, my book shelf is full of self help books — I haven't read any of them but one. I knew this was the right way when I first read about Dr. E and Clinton.  

So there's my experience so far, I hope it helps someone out there. This has worked for me. It's changed my life. Like others, I looked at my dinner early on and said to myself, "This sucks". But now, everything I eat is tasty. Instead of my old deserts, I'll eat a couple pancakes with pure maple syrup. Or I'll have a blueberry muffin. Or I'll have a bowl of Uncle Sam's with Vanilla Almond milk, or one of my dark chocolate (70% or more) bars. 

I've said it before, I don't like the word "diet". For me, that implies something I do that's temporary. This is not a diet for me — it's a lifestyle. My old way of eating seems…not normal. I missed it in the beginning, I don't now. This is the new norm for me.  

I'll add more, but thought I'd throw this up to help others. Has it been hard? Yes. Nothing good comes easy. But now that I've seen some paybacks, it's rocketing me. Yes, I was hoping for better numbers. But instead of focusing on that, I turned it around – realized that this is just the first step of hopefully a long journey. When I think about it like that, I click my heels.

I wish I could transform others, but all I can do is move my feet. Like I say, it sure has made a difference for me. I believe anyone can do this and that they'll have the same experience I have.

Bowlhiker, a couple of us had thanked you on a different post for your inspiring messages and I do so again here.  I think for some the way is direct and may I say "perfect" from the beginning.  However, for most of us it is a meandering path and hard at times.  The important thing is to keep moving forward and your thoughful posting helps with that.

The worst thing that can happen is for someone to believe they should give up because it's hard and they aren't "perfect".  Not giving up is the answer, as you so eloquently point out.

Good for you Bowlhiker!  Thanks for sharing your story.  It is hard at times to adhere to this way of eating, and nearly all of us (or all of us?) slip up from time to time.  You must feel great!  I think there must be a lot of people out there (not eating this way) who feel pretty lousy!  Every once in a while I remind myself that if I eat poorly, that I may look back in 10 or more years, and just wish I had stuck to this – so I'm sticking to it now!

Good morning Everyone!

A few more notes.

In September I told my doctor I was doing this. He looked at me like, "That sounds good, but I've heard it a thousand times before. And, what will you eat? Lettuce all day? Good luck with that".

Yesterday when he walked in the first thing he said was, "I'm really impressed with your bloodwork". He told me, "I wish I had your numbers. Now tell me again what you did?".

He actually set aside additional time to talk to me because he was so impressed. Now keep in mind my doctor is center left. He knows how important food is, knows many health problems are tied to what we eat. But, he's also a pragmatic — as most doctors are. He's more apt to prescribe a pill then recommend something like this. We had a long talk about this and he was listening to me. He wrote down this website. Then he started thinking out loud. He was thinking about what's in his pantry, how much junk there is. It brought him to a pause.

Was he sold on this? Not completely, but you can't argue with the numbers. I definitely had his attention. I'm not sure he's ever seen any results such as mine and I could tell I had moved his line of thinking. I think over time, he could be prescribing this — or at least suggesting it more to his patients. So the thought of that is huge.

Then he told me a story about a patient. The patient was way overweight, had come to him with ankle problems. The diagnosis was a blood clot in the patients leg. They tried stints, spent a lot of Medicaire money on attacking the problem from the outside in. Eventually, after many treatments and certainly pain and stress on the patient, they amputated the patients leg below the knee. My doctor said something to the affect of, "We had to amputate for a problem that was caused not by genetics, but by a lifestyle". The patient was way overweight, their cholesterol numbers were most likely off the charts. My doctor looked at me and wondered that if the patient had simply done what we're doing, the problem could have been corrected — naturally. We'll never know. But I bet if another patient walks in with an issue related to being overweight, my doctor will at least offer this site or Dr. E's site as an option. How cool would that be?

For those who slip and who've found this hard. If you slip, get back up quickly. And it is hard. But I believe that if you'll just hang in there, the sky will clear. That one day hummus will taste better than pizza. You'll get over the hump. You just have to believe, take one bite at a time. We're talking about changing years of habits here, it's not going to happen overnight. But it will happen if you let it.

Cathey. Yes, I get a big charge out of the positive effects of this. Anyone can benefit from this. And, by doing this we're supporting local farmers. There's all kinds of little companies that are trying to bring healthy products to the market. By doing this we're rewarding their efforts, creating jobs, and opening the door for others to do something like open a health food store, or start a farm. In our own way, we're helping the community. Then as time goes by and more people do this, we might even be able to help lower health insurance costs. Yeah, I get a charge from that.

When people come together, that's when change takes place. But on the flip side, we still need regulation to insure that stamps like "USDA Certified Organic" really mean something. We can't put decisions of how our food is labeled in the hands of those who'll benefit financially or politically from the label. If you do the research on the FDA you'll see an organization chart that's either former big business, or has close ties to big business. That must change. The "Organic" label has already started to get dilluted. We need to practice our individual right and take back our food. Protecting our food should be just as important as protecting our country. As citizens, it's our personal right to wage war on anyone who stands in the way of our food. Walking up and down a street holding a sign is great, yes. But I believe the only way to win this war is via the checkout line and to connect with others. 

This site is not about politics and I won't use it as a forum for anything else other than what we're here for. But I would ask all who read this to consider my example of how important regulations are to us. If we take away rules big business will run roughshod over us. Without regulations the small farmer will either have to work for Monsanto or go bankrupt. Regulations are in place to protect us, they're necessary to our soceity. Regulations help protect the little guy and can even the playing field. It's a contradiction to on one hand support a party with a message of, "take away the regulations, get rid of the FDA" and then on the other hand to say you believe in the American dream. 

So that's about enough out of me, thanks for the encouragement and kind words. I believe in this and I believe in you.

Great info and seeing the results are amazing. My husband has DANGEROUSLY high cholesterol, He has pockets on his eyes and is very tired and says he can feel how high it is. He watched and read about this lifestyle and said he wants to live so let's do it. I on the other hand am healthy but would love to shed a few pounds, what women doesn't want that. Also, I have had my thyroid removed and have a calcium deficiency so I actually think this may help me in that way, I hope. I had no idea how much more calcium I will get from nuts and almond milks. Fingers crossed for me but the most important thing is for my husband to be healthy. I want to have him feeling great and out of danger. We have two small girls who need him just as much. 

Since I want to be more on board then saying ok lets do this I did help him dig our first garden, I went whole food shopping and tossed every thing bad out of the house, except a small bowl of items for the kids. We figured hey will be moved into this more carefully. My problem is we r struggling with balance. Everything has an oil or lots of chemicals in it. My husband also wants no chemicals so I am almost feeling this is all to extreme. 

 

Can you or someone help me with …..

 

What cooking spray to get and where?

Chips and or crackers to uses?

Protein bars? Need something fast after my workouts.

Wasa Rye Crackers are good. We have been buying Corn Tortillas at Costco (huge bag $3) and baking them in the oven to make tortilla chips, they go good with Salsa and Horcamole. (Hummus+Avacado)
